The Doñana Biological Station carried out the ringing of the glossy ibis in Doñana

The Doñana's Biodiversity Monitoring Group from the ICTS-EBD had carried out the ringing of young glossy ibis in Doñana, an activity that has not been done for two years. It took place at Lucio de las Casas, next to the José Antonio Valverde visitor center, which is located in the Doñana marsh, and had the participation of volunteers from SEO Bird Life and the technical support from the Doñana Natural Area. In total, almost 200 ibis have been ringed.

After the capture of the birds, the technical team marked the birds with a metallic ring one of their leg and a PVC ring for long-distance reading the other leg. The observation and reading of the ringed birds has allowed, since the beginning of this species rinbing program in 1996, to create an important data base managed by the Ringing Office of the ICTS-EBD. In addition, the monitoring of the colonies of the species and the analysis of the observations, have helped the development of different investigations and projects carried out by researchers from the Doñana Biological Station, which have given rise to numerous Scientific Publications.

The glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) is a very particular species. About 30 years ago it was considered almost extinct as a reproductive species in the peninsular territory and in part of Western Europe. Today they can be easily spotted in places such as Doñana, the Valencian coastal lagoon and the surroundings of the Ebro delta. In addition, there are plenty places in the Iberian Peninsula where their presence is more and more common. Although it is unknown the reasons of its recolonization, thanks to the ringing of the first specimens back in late 90s, it's known that Doñana was the place from which the glossy ibis began his "reconquista" of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as part of the Western Europe and North Africa. Even some specimens have reached the Caribbean Islands. The scientific ringing of this species allows that particular bird to be uniquely identified to study their populations dynamics and conservation.
