A new subspecies of Manx shearwater to the Canary Islands

The taxonomy of Procellariiformes, particularly petrels and shearwaters, is still unresolved. The Manx shearwater Puffinus puffinus is one of the best studied seabirds worldwide. Most of the information known on this seabird is focused on the northern core populations where the species is abundant. However, the species shows a high number of peripheral populations, which are extremely small and difficult to study in comparison to central populations. Using an integrative approach, this...

Genetic variability of red swamp crayfish reveals its invasion process

Patterns of genetic diversity in invasive populations can be modulated by a range of factors acting at different stages of the invasion process, including the genetic composition of the source population(s), the introduction history (e.g. propagule pressure), the environmental suitability of recipient areas, and the features of secondary introductions. The North American red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, is one of the most widely introduced freshwater species worldwide. It was legally...

Human-induced environmental disturbances increase hybridization rates between two Californian oaks

Wildfires, urbanization, and land-clearing for agriculture can be considered among the most important environmental disturbances in Mediterranean regions. Interspecific hybridization has been suggested to be linked to different sources of anthropogenic disturbance, but empirical support to this hypothesis is sparse. This study analyses the impacts of different sources of environmental disturbance on hybridization rates between two Californian oaks.

Evolutionary and demographic history of the Californian scrub white oak species complex: an integrative approach

Understanding the factors promoting species formation is a major task in evolutionary biology research. In this project, funded by the Severo Ochoa-EBD microproject initiative, we have studied the evolutionary history of the six putative species included within the Californian scrub white oak species complex (genus Quercus).
