Animal welfare is a value that is enshrined in Article 13 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU). As a Member State, the Spanish Government has published a law (RD 53/2013) that transposes European Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes.

To comply with legal requirements, the Doñana Biological Station (EBD) has been authorised and registered as a user's establishment (REGA 410910008014) and set up its own animal-welfare body (Comité de Etica de Experimentación Animal (CEEA-EBD).

All scientific research carried on by EBD personnel, or by external personnel at EBD facilities, must take into account Ethical policy and comply with prevailing Legal Requirements.

EBD-CSIC has joined the Agreement on Openness on Animal Research promoted from the Federation of Scientific Societies in Spain, with the collaboration of the European Association of Research Animals. More info can be found at the EBD Transparency Site.
