Query of copies

Service for qualified users both at/outside our research Institute

The in-situ consultation of the collections is from 9 to 14 hours. Outside this timetable users can not remain in the collections rooms, so they should ask for an authorization of the Collection manager.

It is recommended that to give advance notice of the material to be examined and the dates on which the work is being planned. This is especially important in the case of external users and if the volume of copies to be examined is large.

The user will be duly informed about the rules of use and handling of the material deposited in collections and other referring to safety and hygiene.

If the user requests to perform processes that can cause irreversible damage to the samples, such as tissue extractions, a written authorization must be first requested which will be evaluated by the responsible scientist

Loan for scientific purposes

The loans for scientific consultations are only made to qualified persons linked to recognized institutions. Students and PhD can receive loans with the approval of the department head, who will be responsible for the material. It will be appreciated that users request only material that is essential to their work.

Exemplary types, rare or delicate, will be provided only under exceptional circumstances. For security reasons, no more than 50 specimens shall be lent to each consignment, nor more than one-third of the stock of one species.

The costs of transportation of the material will be paid by the applicant.

The specific internal normative for DBS (Doñana Biological Station) personnel is here available

Loan for exhibitions

The material that shape up the scientific collections is part of the Spanish Patrimony and its exit off for loaning from DBS is subject to complex and strict regulations. In this case, the rules are specific and different from the loans for scientific purposes.

The processing of loan authorizations for exhibitions can last for several months. This circumstance must be taken into account by applicants.

The applicant entity will bear all the costs of packaging, transportation and insurance of the material provided.

Taxidermy preparation Lab

The material coming to collections often have no good conditions to enter directly into an specific collection.

In this case, this material must be proccessed in the preparation lab which has the necessary technicians/infrastructure to perform these tasks that are carried out according to internal standards of the collection service.

Besides, these facilities are occasionally used by different research groups for various tasks that can not be carried out in other labs, such as autopsies and manipulations of medium or large corpses (or parts thereof).

This collaboration will going on respecting, the following norms:

Priority related to personnel, space and use of material available at collections.

The order of arrival of the request of the different rooms and material, as well as the duration of the tasks that are going to be carried out. This is the reason why you should try to notified to the service your use interest as far in advance as possible.

It's also recommended to indicate if any kind of advice or assistance is needed from our technicians.

The users must achieve the safety and hygiene standards of this laboratory and general prevention rules.

Installations must keep up clean at the end of the use.

When a specific research would required to process a large number of specimens/cadavers, all aspects (schedules, expenses, e.g.)will must be dealed with the Service manager

Freezing chamber

There is a freezing chamber (-20ºC) in a small room (2x3 m) in which the fresh samples are stored until they are prepared to be incorporated later to the scientific collection.

This camera is usually used by researchers to temporarily store frozen material, although it depends on space limitations.
All material which will be stored in this camera must be well packaged (preferably in carton) and perfectly labeled with the information about owner and contents.

The deposit of material must be notified in advance to the Service manager, and from this moment, the permanence time will be agreed.

Periodically, material that doesn't comply these conditions will be removed.

Disposal of biological waste

The municipal regulations require all generators of biological or sanitary waste, including dead animals, to manage their disposal

So, the remains that are generated during its processing of animals and/or specimens, are stored in the freezer chamber and periodically are leaded to an incinerator.

The scientific collections service undertakes to handle of the biological remains of animal origin that are generated in other laboratories for its elimination. This service will be funded by us, except when the volume of waste is expected to be significant, in which case the service manager shall be notified to ensure correct processing and to agree on its cost.

In cases where a significant volume of waste of this type is anticipated, those responsible for this service will be notified in advance to ensure proper processing and negotiation of their funding
