Apex scavengers from different European populations converge at threatened savannah landscapes

An international scientific team found that “dehesas”, savannah-like systems from the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, attract Eurasian griffon vultures from distant populations from Northern, Central and Southern Spain and Southern France, thanks to the traditional agro-grazing practices and rich wild ungulates populations.

Use of avian GPS tracking to mitigate human fatalities from bird strikes caused by large soaring birds

A research team from the Doñana Biological Station-CSIC and the Miguel Hernández University tracked griffon and cinereous vultures and white storks to study their flight patterns
These species mostly fly under 1,300 meters so the flight altitudes overlapped the legal flight altitude limit set for general aviation, which is 900 meters.

Human footprint and vulture mortality

Events of non-natural mortality in human-dominated landscapes are especially challenging for populations of large vertebrates with K strategies. Among birds, vultures are one of the most threatened groups experiencing sharp population declines due to non-natural mortality. Factors causing non-natural mortality are usually studied separately. However, the potential use of an integrated index able to predict large-scale mortality risks of avian scavengers could be especially useful for planning...
