ANIMAL HOUSING

$elemento.imagen_art.descripcion_img.getData()

Animal facilities (particularly UEA2) are specially designed for temporary housing of small wild amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

Housing conditions, as well as husbandry procedures, including feeding, must strictly adhere to the protocols authorized by the Competent Authority. Researchers are advised to follow the available web resources on the care and husbandry of small vertebrates in captivity when refining their procedures. Protocols for admittance, acclimation, quarantine, release, and transport of animals must be planned in advance with the designated veterinary.

All housed animals must be properly identified according to the instructions and documents provided by the technical staff. An updated animal record is kept for any animal admitted, housed and released from facilities, as well as any veterinary incidences.

All animals housed for a sufficiently long period of time (according to Animal Welfare Body criteria) must enjoy a renewable program of environmental enrichment, summarized in the available form.

A competent staff member will check on a daily basis the welfare of animals, adherence to protocols by the research staff, and the proper working of equipment.

PROJECT GUIDING AND EVALUATION

The Animal Welfare Body (CEEA-EBD) offers comprehensive information to researchers about the ethical and legal requirements that they have to meet in order to safeguard the welfare of animals used for scientific purposes. This information includes an extensive bibliographic database on general and specific guidelines on the ethical use and care of wild animals. UEA resources also include protocols about care, husbandry, veterinary medicine and environmental enrichment for wild animals in captivity. Every research protocol at EBD-CSIC involving animal use is overseen by the Animal Welfare Body and supervised by the designated veterinarian and animal welfare expert. CEEA-EBD also elaborates technical reports required for evaluation and authorisation of research projects in compliance with European laws on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes.
