RESEARCH INTERESTS / PROJECTS

Evolutionary ecology of plant-animal interactions | Ecological genetics of Mediterranean plants | Plants community ecology

I'm interested in the evolutionary consequences of ecological plant-animal interactions at different life history stages of plants, especially at recruitment, seed dispersal, and post-dispersal phases. From a wider perspective, I have studied plant-animal interactions in the context of the Theory of Geographic Mosaic of Coevolution. Some publications were highlighted by John N. Thompson in his two monographies presenting this Theory, and also in Faculty of 1000 Biology (2006). On the other hand, I'm also interested in geographic genetic patterns underlying divergence processes in Mediterranean plants. I have explored this patterns with the genus Aquilegia at Iberian Peninsula and Tyrrhenian islands. These works have also reported interesting results on taxonomy (describing a new species) and conservation of endangered taxa.

Currently, I'm involved in a project on Interactions Networks and Community Ecology were we study the mechanisms involved in species coexistence in communities of Mediterranean woody plants (below-ground mutualistic interactions with mycorrhizal fungi and above-ground antagonistic interactions with pathogenic fungi and insect pests).
