Bio

I am a senior researcher at the Department of Ecology and Evolution at EBD-CSIC (Doñana Biological Station, Sevilla, Spain). I obtained my PhD in 1989 on parent-offspring communicative interactions in magpies. Then I had two postdoc fellowships at CSIC (1990-1991) and the Behavioural Ecology Group at the Department of Zoology of the University of Cambridge (UK) (1991-1992) on communicative interactions between brood-parasitic chicks and their hosts.

I have played an active role in organizing I+D activities related to the study of animal behaviour in Spain. I was a founder member of the Spanish Society of Ethology and Evolutionary Ecology (SEEE) and have joined the organizing committee of several SEEE meetings and one International Ethological Conference (ICE).

My teaching experience began as a lecturer in Statistics for undergraduate Veterinary students (University of Extremadura). In my discipline, I have participated as a coordinator and lecturer in the Master Degree Course in Ethology (University of Córdoba) and the Master Degree Course in Applied Ethology and Animal Behaviour (Pablo de Olavide University).

Since 2011, I combine my research work with the institutional responsibilities of chairing the Animal Welfare Body and ensuring compliance with European laws on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes at the EBD-CSIC Animal Facility, where we have achieved a ground-breaking success at adapting the current legislation to wildlife research.
