Open Call for Research Projects in ICTS-Doñana!

The Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructure Doñana Biological Reserve (ICTS-Doñana) announces the opening of a call for international research projects in the Doñana Natural Space.

Selected projects will receive a grant of up to €10,000 per application, intended to cover expenses such as travel and per diems for researchers, consumables, and small research project materials.

Priority will be given to international projects that collaborate with Spanish research teams in Doñana Natural Space, that make use of the facilities of the ICTS and/or use environmental monitoring data provided by ICTS-Doñana.

The call for proposals will remain open until 30 June 2024, with priority given to projects led by young researchers and women.

Heterozygosity at a single locus explains a large proportion of fitness variation in great tits

The association between genetic diversity and four traits related to offspring viability in great tits has been explored. It was tested whether significant heterozygosity-fitness correlations (HFCs) were due to a "general" (a genome-wide effect) or a "local" (only one or a few loci involved) effect. Maternal heterozygosity was positively associated with offspring size even after controlling for the average size of the parents. A significant negative relationship between parental genetic relatedness and hatching success was also observed. However, one locus (Ase18) had disproportionately large effects on the observed HFCs. Results suggest that this particular neutral marker may be linked to functional loci influencing fitness in this species and offer one of the most clear examples about the potential important role of local effects in observed HFCs.
