Snakebite envenomation is a major public health issue in tropical regions, including Latin America. Research on snakebite envenomation has focused on the characterization of venom toxins and the development of antivenoms; however, the venom-associated microbiota and its potential contribution to secondary infections have received little attention. This presentation will outline the results obtained from a study of the microbiota associated with B. asper snakebites, using an integrated strategy that combined culture-independent methods —specifically 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding— with culture-dependent methods.
