I will present work on the causes and consequences of individual variation in social behavior, using treefrog acoustic communication as a model. I will discuss our recent work using acoustic recordings, behavioral experiments, physiological measurements and simulation to understand how individuals compete and choose mates in complex social groups. Our work integrates ideas from sexual selection, social network theory, behavioral energetics, and neuroethology.
