Evidence suggests that pollinators are declining, yet it remains unclear when changes in their communities lead to reduced plant reproduction. Using meta-analysis, historical datasets, and field studies, I show that the consequences for plants depend on their traits and life histories. Pollination can therefore be both buffered against and vulnerable to pollinator loss.
