My research addresses questions on evolutionary ecology and conservation biology. My model species are birds, either threatened with extinction or of marked social or economic interest. I apply molecular tools to deal with ecological questions posed at the individual and population levels, assessing whether the declines
suffered by imperilled populations implies a loss of genetic variability. In addition, I explore when and how population fragmentation leads to population structuring and how morphological variation within populations relates to underlying genetic variation. Apart from the above mentioned conservation genetics studies (and admittedly unrelated to them), I also am interested in the evolution of communication signals in animals like the evolution of bird plumage colouration and its role in signalling genetic quality, social status and/or body condition. I am also working in the emerging field of light pollution as it impinges on its potential effects on biodiversity.
