More than 250 researchers gather in Seville in the VII International Congress on Biodiversity and Nature Conservation

The organization is led by the Conserbio association, the Doñana Biological Station (EBD-CSIC), and Pablo de Olavide University (UPO).

Seville will host the 7th International Congress on Biodiversity and Nature Conservation on September 18–19, 2025. The event will take place at the Instituto de la Grasa (CSIC) and the Andalusian Center for Developmental Biology (CABD).

This congress sets a record this year for participation with over 250 attendees, from over 15 countries. It will bring together national and international researchers, specialists in biodiversity, conservation biology, and science communication. The event further consolidates Seville as a key reference in the discussion and advancement of these disciplines, featuring a strong international presence this year.

The organization is led by the Conserbio association, the Doñana Biological Station (EBD-CSIC), and Pablo de Olavide University (UPO), with active participation of scientific staff from these institutions on the organizing and scientific committees. In addition, the organizing committee includes researchers from four other Andalusian and national universities, and the scientific committee includes representatives from nine national and international institutions and universities. The International Campus of Excellence in Environment, Biodiversity, and Global Change (CEI–CamBio) also plays a key role in coordination, with funding from the Andalusian Complementary Biodiversity Plan: European Union – Next Generation – Recovery Plan – Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities – Government of Spain and the Junta de Andalucía.

The program, available on the congress website, is structured in morning and afternoon sessions, with keynote lectures for each thematic section, oral communications, and presentations by researchers from diverse backgrounds.

The keynote lectures will be delivered by internationally recognized researchers:

  • Dr. Eloy Revilla, director of the Doñana Biological Station, will open the section on Biodiversity and Conservation of Terrestrial Flora and Fauna.
  • Dr. Antonio Gallardo, professor at UPO, will present in the Global Change section the lecture titled “From the Paris Agreement to Permafrost Thaw: A Journey through the Carbon Cycle.”
  • Dr. Charlotte Franseciaz, researcher at the French Office of Biodiversity, will inaugurate the Marine Biodiversity and Conservation section with a talk on the transition from research to action in conservation.
  • Dr. Marta Sánchez, researcher at the Doñana Biological Station, will open the Environmental Outreach and Management section with a talk on new paradigms in science communication.

The biennial congress not only highlights the work of established researchers but also provides a platform for early-career scientists to present their undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral research. This inclusive approach reflects the congress’s philosophy, conceived from the beginning as an accessible and affordable event for students.

The program also includes two post-congress field trips to emblematic natural areas in the province of Seville: the Brazo del Este Natural Area and the Sierra Morena Natural Park of Seville.

The official inauguration will be led by Dr. Luis Villagarcía Saiz, director of CEI–CamBio, together with the congress co-directors, Dr. Marga L. Rivas (University of Cádiz) and Dr. Sergio López Martínez (University of Almería).

The organizing committee hopes this event will become a reference forum where scientific staff, students, conservationists, and nature enthusiasts can share the latest advances in conservation and reaffirm a common goal: preserving the planet’s biodiversity.
