Descripción
This project is specifically focussed on West Nile Virus, a virus that has been circulating in Europe and the Mediterranean region for decades, but has recently re-emerged with an unprecedented virulence, increasing the level of concern for the European Community. The number of human and veterinary cases, as well as of countries where disease activity is being detected, are expanding. The reasons for this re-emergence are not known, but it coincides with an increase in geographic range for this virus, which reached the Americas in 1999, where it caused the worst West Nile outbreak ever recorded, with approximately 28,000 human cases and more than 1,100 deaths. The strategic aim of this project is to develop in cooperation with other EU funded projects (Edenext), an integrated European research capacity on WNV in Europe, specially focused on generating new knowledge and innovative products of specific interest to the European citizens, through the cooperation between experts from different countries and disciplines.
