Stakeholders perceptions of the endangered Egyptian vulture: insights for conservation

The inclusion of perceptions, interests and needs of stakeholders in biodiversity conservation is critical for the long-term protection of endangered species. Yet, the social dimensions of endangered species conservation are often overlooked. Here, the social perceptions of the conservational importance of the globally endangered Egyptian vulture are examined in one of the most important breeding areas worldwide: the Bardenas Reales Protected Area, northern Spain.

Endemic species underrepresented in the Habitats Directive

The Iberian Peninsula is a major European region of biodiversity, as it harbours more than 30% of European endemic species. Despite a number of studies having evaluated the ability of nature reserves to protect certain taxa, there is still a lack of knowledge on how Iberian endemic fauna are represented in these reserves. Here, biodiversity hotspots of Iberian endemicity were detected and the effectiveness of the Natura 2000 network in representing 249 endemic species from eight animal...

Productivity in a German Osprey population

The Osprey is an emblematic example of conservation. Currently, the species is progressively recovering in population size and range after dramatic reductions as a consequence of human persecution and the use of pesticides in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Here, the population trend and productivity were analysed in relation to the nesting substrate and the protection status of the nest location.

Evaluation of the network of protection areas for the feeding of scavengers in Spain

Protected areas are one of the most common strategies for wildlife conservation worldwide. However, their effectiveness is rarely evaluated. In Europe, after the outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, a restrictive sanitary regulation prohibited the abandonment of dead livestock in extensive farming in the field, which led to negative consequences for scavengers. As an attempt to mitigate this negative impact, a new regulation was approved to allow farmers to leave extensive livestock...
