The Cantabrian brown bear's range has expanded up to 17,000 km2 after decades of decline

Researchers at the EBD-CSIC relate the trend to the change of characteristics of the territory occupied by the bears. The study points to the need to adapt management tools for the conservation of the new distribution area of the population of this endangered species. The researchers have observed that while the area with presence of brown bear individuals has increased considerably from the 1990s, the area with presence of bears with cubs has remained stable over time.

Bears also use visual cues to communicate with each other

Adult males mark trees during the breeding season by scratching and biting the bark. These markings help us to locate the species' breeding grounds, crucial for successful conservation plans

Fifty bear stragglers in Italy resist genomic meltdown

In Central Italy, one hundred kilometers from Rome, a small group of 50 brown bears lives in complete isolation. This study reveals an extraordinary landscape of extremely low genetic variation. The question is: how could the Apennine bears have resisted for such a long time at very low population size and be apparently in good shape? Surprisingly, few genomic regions with very high diversity stand out from the low and flat background characterizing the rest of the genome. These regions are...

Consequences of brown bear viewing tourism: A review

The brown bear is among the most targeted species for ecotourism in North America and Europe. As bear viewing often occurs in sensitive places where bears congregate for mating, rearing young and/or feeding, it is important to evaluate potential positive and negative effects of different viewing practices.
