My main interests are wetland ecology and waterbird ecology, particularly in Mediterranean wetlands. I have previously carried out numerous autoecological studies on threatened waterbird species (for example, the marbled teal and the white-headed duck). I have also conducted various studies on sexual selection in amphibians and waterbirds, and on biometrics and physical condition in vertebrates. I am now particularly interested in the interactions between waterbirds and the wider aquatic ecosystems. Among the main research topics in my laboratory are the ways in which birds disperse plants and invertebrates between wetlands, and how their predation affects invertebrate and plant communities. I also study zooplankton in brackish and hypersaline wetlands, including the genetics of their populations and the cestode parasites they share with birds. Much of my research is applied to conservation issues in Doñana and other large Mediterranean wetlands (for example, wetland restoration, threatened species, biological invasions, heavy metal pollution).
