ICTS - Doñana Biological Station

The EBD-CSIC is responsible for the administration and management of the Doñana Biological Reserve. In addition, according to Law 91/1978 of Doñana and Royal Decree 97/2005, the director of the EBD is responsible for the coordination of all research projects carried out in the Doñana Natural Area (128,385 ha) and for the execution of the Monitoring Programme

In 2006, the Doñana Biological Reserve was recognised as a Singular Scientific and Technological Infrastructure (ICTS-RBD) by the Interministerial Commission for Science and Technology (CICYT) of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science.

The ICTS-RBD has several facilities and programs that monitor the status and trends of biodiversity in the protected areas of Doñana and, more broadly in the Western Mediterranean region. These include the Doñana Monitoring Program, the Bird Ringing Lab and the Doñana Scientific Collections.

The team is made up of technical and managerial staff consisting of 30 people, 15 dedicated to monitoring and 15 dedicated to the maintenance of the field stations

Aims

  • To provide access and support to the Spanish and international scientific community carrying out research projects in the Doñana Protected Areas.
  • To develop and implement state-of-the-art sensor systems interconnected by communication infrastructures, to guarantee the automated monitoring of wildlife and ecosystems in Doñana, as well as the development of scientific research based on it.

Roblehondo Field Station

The Roblehondo Field Station, which is 350 km from Seville, is situated in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park (214,300 hectares). The CSIC has had a presence in the region since the mid-1950s, when José Antonio Valverde, founder of the Doñana Biological Station, led several zoological expeditions.

The CSIC's research activity intensified greatly in 1978, when researchers from the Doñana Biological Station began to use the field station (Casa Forestal) at Roblehondo in the municipal district of La Iruela as a base for their investigations. The infrastructure, located in the center of Navahondona-Guardahornillos Reserve, houses a field station, administratively dependent on the Doñana Biological Station, thanks to a cession of use granted by the Junta de Andalucía (Andalusian Regional Government) to the CSIC.
