I began my research career in Ukraine at the Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv. In 2014, I moved to Germany for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie-funded PhD at the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries and Humboldt University of Berlin, studying the ecology and evolution of aquatic Diptera in European lakes. I subsequently worked at the Senckenberg Museum and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich before joining the Estación Biológica de Doñana (CSIC) in Seville as a Ramón y Cajal researcher.
My research focuses on aquatic ecosystems, environmental change and the use of fossil and modern insects to understand ecological processes over long timescales. My group combines palaeobiology, ecology, taxonomy and quantitative approaches to reconstruct past environments and establish long-term ecological baselines. I am particularly interested in how insect communities respond to climate and other environmental changes, and in the information that natural history collections and fossil records can provide about ecosystems of the past.
